Puppy Training: 7 Simple Tips to Get Started

3 min read

Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. Between toilet training, chewing, jumping up and those unexpected bursts of energy, there’s plenty to learn — for both you and your puppy!

The good news? Puppy training doesn’t have to be complicated.

With patience, consistency and the right approach, you can help your puppy develop good habits while building a strong relationship from the very beginning.

Here are seven simple tips to help you get started.

1. Start Training from Day One

You don’t need to wait until your puppy is older to begin training.

Simple activities such as responding to their name, coming when called and settling calmly can be introduced as soon as your puppy arrives home.

Keep things relaxed and enjoyable. Young puppies have short attention spans, so a few minutes of training at a time is often enough.

2. Reward the Behaviour You Want

Dogs learn through experience, and rewarding desirable behaviour helps them understand what works.

When your puppy does something you’d like to see again, reward them with something they enjoy, such as a small treat, praise or a favourite toy.

For example, if your puppy sits calmly instead of jumping up, acknowledge that behaviour.

The more you reward good choices, the more opportunities your puppy has to practise them.

3. Keep Your Training Consistent

Consistency makes learning easier for your puppy.

If jumping on the sofa is allowed one day but discouraged the next, your puppy may struggle to understand what you expect.

Try to agree on simple household rules and ensure everyone follows the same approach.

Remember, puppies are still learning. Mistakes are a normal part of the process.

4. Make Socialisation a Positive Experience

Socialisation isn’t just about meeting other dogs.

It’s about helping your puppy feel comfortable with the world around them.

This may include experiencing different sounds, surfaces, people, environments and everyday activities.

Introduce new experiences gradually and at a pace your puppy can manage.

A positive experience is much more valuable than overwhelming your puppy with too much at once.

If your puppy hasn’t completed their vaccinations, ask your vet about safe ways to introduce them to the outside world.

5. Teach Your Puppy to Feel Comfortable Alone

It’s natural to want to spend every moment with your new puppy, but gradually helping them feel comfortable with short periods apart can be beneficial.

Start with very brief, manageable separations while your puppy is relaxed and comfortable.

Build up slowly, paying attention to their behaviour.

The aim is to help your puppy feel safe and secure, not to force them to cope with situations that cause distress.

6. Remember That Rest Is Important

Puppies need plenty of sleep and downtime.

An overtired puppy may become more excitable, mouthy or find it harder to settle.

Make sure your puppy has a comfortable, quiet place to rest without unnecessary interruptions.

Training, play and exploration are important, but so is learning how to relax.

7. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Every puppy is different.

Some settle into family life quickly, while others need additional support with confidence, toilet training, biting or everyday behaviour.

If you’re struggling, seeking professional guidance early can make a real difference.

Good training should support your puppy’s wellbeing and help you understand their individual needs.

Building a Happy Future Together

Puppy training isn’t about having a perfectly behaved dog overnight.

It’s about communication, trust and helping your puppy develop the skills they need to navigate everyday life.

Celebrate the small wins, be patient with setbacks and remember to enjoy the journey.
